Changes in bispectral index values during lumbar arthrodesis.

چکیده
EDITOR: Several authors have reported sudden increases of the bispectral index values during different procedures such as endoscopic shoulder surgery [1], deep hypothermic circulatory arrest [2] or after using an upper-body blanket for warming [3]. In addition, spurious bispectral index values can be observed when the electromyogram activity of the bispectral index monitor reaches a value of 50 [4]. In all these reports there is a general agreement that the bispectral index monitor shows an erroneous value, which must be interpreted carefully. In the present report we present four cases of patients who underwent general anaesthesia for lumbar arthrodesis, in which the depth of anaesthesia was assessed with the BIS A-2000TM bispectral index monitoring system (Aspect Medical Systems, Natick, MA, USA). In all patients, we observed a sudden increase in the bispectral index values coinciding with an intense surgical stimulation of the spinal roots.

Do we need bispectral index monitoring during total intravenous anesthesia for lumbar discectomies?
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bispectral index (BIS) monitoring on hemodynamic parameters, drug consumption and awareness during total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with remifentanil and propofol in lumbar discectomies. After institutional ethical committee approval, ASAI-II 56 patients were divided as control and BIS groups. Anesthesia was induced by bolus remifentanil...
متن کاملDUPLICATE PUBLICATION: Comparison of entropy and bispectral index values during propofol induction.
OBJECTIVE To identify the entropy levels that would correspond to bispectral index (BIS) levels in general anesthesia (GA) induction in patients who will undergo elective lumbar disc surgery (LDS). METHODS Thirty cases who underwent LDS under GA were included in our study after obtaining patient consent and approval of the Ethics Committee of Afyon Kocatepe University Medical School, Afyonkar...
متن کاملImpact of Bispectral Index Monitoring Versus Clinical Judgment as a Guide for Conduction of Anesthesia on Serum Cortisol Level in Co-ronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery
Background: Inadequate depth of anesthesia leads to release of stress hormones. Electroencephalographic monitoring by bispectral index is a guide to asses the depth of anesthesia. The aim of the present study was to measure the serum cortisol levels as an index of stress response in patients who are candidates for coronary artery bypass graft surgery in two groups of patients. Methods: Seventy-...

INTRODUCTION We aimed to identify the entropy levels that would be equivalent to the bispectral index (BIS) levels in sevoflurane anaesthesia in patients who are to undergo elective lumbar disc surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty cases in ASA groups I-II who underwent lumbar disc surgery under general anaesthesia were included in our study after obtaining the consent of the patients and Ethi...
متن کاملEvaluation of Mexiletine Effect on Bispectral Index Changes and Hemodynamic Responses to Endotracheal Intubation and During General Anesthesia
Background &Objective: Plaryngoscopy and tracheal intubation increase not only blood pressure and heart rate but also Bispectral Index (BIS) of the patients. In this study, hemodynamic and BIS changes were surveyed after tracheal intubation and during general anesthesia followed by mexiletine prescription . Materials & Methods: In this study, 50 patients aged between 20 and 60 who were ca...
